Do You Agree? XXL’s Freshman Class 2013 Revealed

freshman

XXL Magazine“s anticipated freshman class of 2013 has finally been revealed. Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, Kirko Bangz, Travi$ Scott, Angel Haze, Dizzy Wright, Logic, School Boy Q, and Trinidad James all appear in this group shot while, “the hate being sober artist“, Chief Keef appears on the side individually. Every year XXL puts together this list and every year I usually disagree. But this year they have a couple of heavy hitters but is this their “best ever”. Of course Hip Hop heads are going to debate but what’s Hip hop without controversy?

Congrats to all of you artists that made the cut! There are still some artists on this list I have yet to listen to like some of you readers so I decided to do a run down on the artists that are not mainstream.

The yearbook of XXL’s Freshman Class of 2013….
Joey Bada$$

I’ve already explained in my last post about how I felt about Joey Badda$$. This is one of my favorites from the his mixtape 1999:

Ab-Soul
IMG_1795

Ab-Soul is a rapper from Carson California known as The Future of West Coast Rap. He is currently signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records. He has done tracks with Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q to name a few. I love the message in this song, him and Kendrick Lamar were speaking to me:

Action Bronson
actionbronson_alchemist

Action Bronson is an artist I was not aware about till this list was released. Born as Ariyan Arslani, Bronson grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, the son of an Albanian immigrant father and a Jewish mother. The New York Times named Bronson as “one of the most promising prospects in New York hip-hop. I like the throwback instrumental on this track and his flow is nice. I will be adding him to my playlists, I found a couple of tracks that I liked.

Dizzy Wright
dizzy-wright

Dizzy Wright is putting Las Vegas,NV on. I love the messages in his music, I feel like his music is filled with soul. The fact that he is my age but so wise and self-conscious is sexy. I love the Anita Baker sample in this track, I love to walk on campus with this tune in my ear:

Angel Haze
091812-video-music-angel-haze-4

I have been on Angel Haze for almost four years ago. I actually first saw her funny Youtube videos before I listened to music. This girl is not only hilarious but she is a lyrical beast. I am so happy for her success because she deserves all the recognition. I am just confused with her look right now.
First she was a stud looking rapper now she is a girly looking rapper. Don’t mind me though I just was curious if she was straight now or is she still werkin Girls:

Logic
logic-490x410
Rapper Logic, is fairly new to my ears but he is a Maryland native on the rap scene since he was 17. Logic started his fan base at University of Maryland and now his followers are multiplying. I like the vibe on this track, he is really artistic with his sounds and samples.

Travi$ Scott
travisscott_10-11-2012

Travi$ Scott is signed to GOOD Music and is working on his first album. THis guy’s music can range from classic hip hop to techno. I respect his flow and the fact that he is changing the typical sound of Hip Hop. This generation is experimenting with everything musically and breaking the barrier. This “animal” track gives me a Kanye West vibe but it’s definitely dope.

Schoolboy Q
Schoolboy_Q-HNC_PSA

Schoolboy Q is a rapper representing South Central, LA. He also is signed to TopDawg ENT and has does numerous songs with Kendrick Lamar and Ab-$oul. The west coast has been adding players to the game lately. I think he is talented but i don’t know if he is my type of rap artist I would listen to everyday.
I like this track produced by Boi 1da though.

Who is your favorite on this List? Do you agree with XXL that this is their “Best Ever”

Did You Hear? Frank Ocean’s Letter x Lauryn Hill’s Jail Sentence

20120709-020352.jpg

On July 7th at 1:08am my celebrity crush, Frank Ocean revealed to the world about his hidden sexuality. Frank Ocean decided to post a descriptive letter about his other side. I personally am happy for him coming out and being completely honest about his lifestyle. I feel as though so many other undercover artists should feel inspired and to follow his footsteps. I mean we all know Frank isn’t the only one on the rainbow. Discrete homosexuality is very common right now so you have to be cautious. What I cant understand is why he decided to reveal this right before his album debut. Maybe the homosexuality community will buy his album, it seems to be working pretty well for Nicki Minaj.I mean there is no way that Frank Ocean did not discuss this with his label and his publicist before releasing this to the public. If so the record label would have told him to delete the letter. But personally I still love him like I did on July 6th and I wish him success. I just hope he stays away from the dark life of hollywood.

How many of our black entertainers will allow themselves to be victims of the IRS? Miss Lauryn Hill has been sentenced for 3 years because of unpaid taxes. I understand Ms.hill if you were making 7.65 an hour like me and forgot to file taxes but baby you are not me. Everybody knows you cant hide from the IRS for too long. I really think that Lauryn was refusing to pay taxes for a more in depth reason and I agree with you but you have to think about your family. Sometimes our intentions are good but our intentions are not our reality and most of the time our reality is not what we visioned it would be. I love you Lauryn Hill like you were my oldest sister in another life. Someone I looked up to for advice and admired from a far. PAY YOUR TAXES SISTA!

It seems like the music industry is not about music anymore. Its more about the dollar, how quick you can make it, and how long can you keep it circulating.

Stay tuned for my post on the Chris Brown, Drake, Meek Millz, Rihanna love triangle and how this just might be just another big ol’ publicity stunt.

Can we just get back to the music and stop the chaos?

Did You Hear? Lil wayne x Drake x Chris Brown x D’Angelo

Hello Everybody!!!! It’s been a minute since I did a celebrity gossip and urban news post so I just wanted to update you on some things and give you my perspectives.

On May 23, Lil Wayne decided to express his feelings on Twitter about Pusha T. Apparently Lil Wayne felt like Pusha T was coming at him and his Young Money crew on his new song “Exodus 2:31.” Pusha T rhymes “contract all f’d up./ I guess that means you all f’d./ You signed to one n***a, then signed to another n***a, then  signed to three n****s./ Now that’s bad luck.”

I’m actually anticipating a reply back from Pusha T because I can’t say he wasn’t coming at Young Money.I think Pusha T’s subliminal diss definitely relates to the Young Money Camp. I don’t think Wayne should have went on twitter with a rant though.  But since he did he could have at least mentioned Pusha T. It just seems like Twitter has been stirring up controversy making me feel like celebrities tweet reckless things just for publicity. Lil Wayne needs to get off twitter and figure out why he’s wearing my little sister’s leggings.

Drake & Chris Brown Unreleased Track “Yahama Mama”

I remember when Soulja Boy first released this track when I was in high school a couple of years ago. I never really liked Soula Boy’s verses but I feel in love with Chris Brown’s chorus. I think I even had this as a ringtone. Well for all you Drake and Chris Brown fans there has been an unreleased collaboration version of the ‘Yamaha Mama’ song. I love the song but I can tell that these Drake verses are old. This song has the potential to be a Summer hit. Hopefully these fellas can be cordial again and officially get back in the studio together!

Deangelo’s GQ Magazine Interview

I am so excited that D’angelo is coming back to us!!! In his first interview (and magazine shoot) in 12 years, D’Angelo talks to the June 2012 issue of GQ Magazine about what he’s been up to in his time off from music, why he left the industry without warning over 10 years ago, his run-ins with the law, his struggles with substance abuse and more.(gossiponthis.com)

From the GQ June 2012 issue…

D’Angelo on the evil forces in music, and how much power music has:

“There’s forces that are going on that I don’t think a lot of motherf**kers that make music today are aware of. It’s deep. I’ve felt it. I’ve felt other forces puling at me.” He stubs out his cigarette and leans toward me, taking my hand. “This is a very powerful medium that we are involved in,” he says gravely. “I learned at an early age that what we were doing in the choir was just as important as the preacher. It was a ministry in itself. We could stir the pot, you know? The stage is our pulpit, and you can use all of the energy and that music and the lights and the colors and the sound. But you know, you’ve got to be careful.”

Angie Stone — the mother of one of D’Angel’s kids — recalls an incident where she was pushed to the side at an awards show so he could walk the red carpet with Vivica Fox, instead of her:

Stone remembers an event in Manhattan in September 1996 that was billed as Giorgio Armani’s tribute to D’Angelo. Stone-thirteen years older than D-was three months pregnant with their son. They headed to the event together in a limo, but as they neared the venue where D was going to perform, it suddenly pulled over. “He was asked to get into another car, where he would be escorted by Vivica Fox,” Stone says, her voice breaking slightly. The lissome Fox had just appeared with Will Smith in the blockbuster Independence Day. “It was a Hollywood moment. They wanted a trophy girl. I had to walk in behind them to flashing cameras. It started the wheels turning of what was yet to come.”

D’Angelo will also be performing at the Jay-Z’s Budweiser Made in America Festival in Philadelphia this September.

I think D’Angelo’s views on the entertainment industry is so real. Whether you believe it or not this is a business and with every business there are powerful forces running behind them. I also feel as though Angie Stone endured a lot with D’angelo while she was with him just because she didn’t have that typical model girl look. I think the entertainment is still in some ways forcing celebrities in situations like Angie’s and D’angelo’s. It’s now up to these celebrities to take control of their personal lives because at the end of the day the media only cares about your image not necessarily you.

Did You Hear??

I decided to do a run down with some current events that I thought was interesting in the hip hop world.

Nicki & her random twitter publicity stunt! Check out this video of Hip Hop politics!

THINK LIKE A MAN MAKES 33 MILLION IN THE BOX OFFICE THIS WEEKEND!!!!! Congrats to the cast and director of “Think Like a Man. I’m happy that this movie did well because we need more successful classic black movies. Recently, Terrence J and the director, William Packer stopped by my school, North Carolina A&T University, to promote this movie. I had so much fun that I lost my voice. I love what Packer is doing in Hollywood right now, we support you my brotha!!! Check out the video.

Shoutout to allhiphop.com for the Lil Kim info. I personally would take Lil Kim over Nicki any day!!! Been rappin her rhymes since I was 4 so I gotta respect her. But I think she deserved to have a couple more cites. She should have at least had a show in Atlanta or Miami. Does anybody besides me even care that the Queen Bee is coming back? Guess we will see when the tour ticket sales start adding up.
